One of the challenges for a novice MATE Ranger ROV team (Remote Operated Vehicle) is creating an effective thruster control system. The simplest method is a 3 position toggle switch, connected directly to a thruster. While this system is cheap, it produces herky-jerky movements and the ROV is unable to “hover”. An ROV must be […]
Building an ROV
From the Mission Scope, you‟ll learn exactly what is required of your ROV…what mission tasks it must perform, in what sequence and in how much time. You‟ll also learn from the Mission Scope what your limitations are in terms of the size or electrical power allowed for your robot; the equipment you can, must or

Introduction: The course assumes the students know nothing about electronics or robotics so we start from scratch. The textbooks for the course are Electricity and Electronics by Gerrish, Dugger, Roberts and Robot Building for Beginners by David Cook since they cover the fundamentals of electronics and robotics and provide a hands-on robot project called Sandwich.
This course introduces students, educators and other aspiring inventors to subsea technology. This exciting resource provides the information needed to design and build underwater vehicles. It also encourages bright young minds to consider a career in the world of underwater robotics.
