A Decade of Flight Under Part 107

The Drone Safety Team marked the 10-year anniversary of the FAA’s implementation of Part 107 by creating an infographic that illustrates the impact of the aviation rule.

Named after its location in the federal code, Part 107 opened the door of innovation to a booming new industry in America. It is the primary rule governing the commercial use of small, unmanned aircraft systems in the national airspace system.

Before Part 107 took effect, only fully certified pilots could fly drones and in limited situations, such as on closed movie sets. Part 107 made it easier for people to become drone pilots without going through more rigorous and expensive flight training.

The impact of the rule over the past decade is evident in the latest drone statistics, which the FAA provided for the Drone Safety Team infographic below. For example, among the 535,000 Part 107 pilots and 1.48 million people who fly drones for recreation, there are now about 42 million operations per year.
