Basic Electrical Theory and Wiring

5/5

Course Description

This course, developed by Bridgerland Technical College, teaches students basic electrical theory, including electrical fundamentals, basic electricity, basic electrical circuits, electrical systems and protection, alternating current, relays, transformers, and grounding and bonding. Upon completing the course, students should be able to:
  • understand basic PPE (personal protective equipment),
  • understand proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO),
  • understand electrical safety as part of the NFPA 70E standard,
  • understand basic electrical schematic symbols,
  • understand basic electrical AC/DC theory,
  • use a digital multimeter,
  • understand electrical system protection devices,
  • understand relays and transformers,
  • know how to properly ground/bond an electrical system per NEC code,
  • identify common conduit types and their applications per NEC code,
  • size, measure, and hand bend EMT,
  • specify the number of conductors for conduits per NEC code,
  • identify common conductor types and their applications per NEC code,
  • wire common home circuits including 3-way and 4-way switches,
  • wire common control circuits,
  • wire common electrical circuits using a breadboard, and
  • follow a step-by-step troubleshooting process to solve problems within an integrated system.
